A Spanish expatriate painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer, Picasso was considered radical in his work. After a long prolific career, he died on April 8, 1973, in Mougins, France. The enormous body of Picasso's work remains, however, and the legend lives on-a tribute to the vitality of the "disquieting" Spaniard with the "sombre piercing" eyes who superstitiously believed that work would keep him alive. For nearly 80 of his 91 years, Picasso devoted himself to an artistic production that contributed significantly to-and paralleled the entire development of-modern art in the 20th century.

Seiko, Homage to Andy Warhol, Screenprint: Screenprint on lennox museum board Signed and numbered in pencil Edition: 100, 15 AP, 15 Roman, 10 HC, 30 TP Year 1989 He was raised in Palm beach, Florida. Smith received his bachelor of arts degree from Pratt Institute, New York City in 1973, in painting and printmaking. Shortly thereafter, he was offered the position of master printer at Tamarind Institute in Los Angeles, but declined, deciding to work independently in New York. Smith had spent most of his childhood intrigued by the tropical, lush surroundings indigenous to Florida and began painting and studied under the American landscape painter, A. E. Bakus. Surface quality became a significant aspect of his paintings and he experimented with illuminating a dimensional source within and on top of his canvases, eventually leading to the application of diamond dust particles onto his surfaces to enhance the prismatic properties of light and color. In 1974, Smith met Andy Warhol and assisted him with his hand-painted flowers editions. Mr. Smith established a close relationship with Warhol more than 15 years ago and was named his master printmaker and art director in 1977 - only four years after graduating from the Pratt Institute - when he collaborated with Warhol on the Hammer and Sickle painting and silkscreens. So pleased was Warhol with the master printer's work that the artist allowed Mr. Smith's printer's stamp next to the signature "Andy Warhol" on all of their works. Warhol's works bearing Mr. Smith's mark include his portraits of Princess Grace of Monaco, Ingrid Bergman, Mickey Mouse and Edward Kennedy, as well as the works known as Reigning Queens - 1985, Endangered Species - 1983 and Shoes - 1980 and all the privately commissioned work Warhol did during the last 10 years of his life. Rupert Jasen Smith, aside from being Andy Warhol''s printer and an important collaborator with Warhol in his later years, was an artist in his own right. ome critics say that without Psaier and fellow artist Rupert Jasen Smith in the background, Warhol could never have produced and maintained production of the Factory commercial output but with both dignity and style both men chose not to take the limelight from Warhol. Mr. Smith also was an artist of note in his own right and achieved acclaim for his portrait and portfolio of Greta Garbo. His work is represented by Gallery Sho in Tokyo, Gallerie Borjeson in Sweden and the Hokin galleries in Chicago, Miami and Palm Beach, as well as the Fred Dorfman Gallery in New York. Mr. Smith printer's stamp is also on many of the works of Larry Rivers, Keith Haring, Kenny Scarf and photographer Francesco Scavullo. A native of New Hope whose grandfather was New Hope's "country doctor" for 50 years, Mr. Smith himself became something of a legend in Bucks County. Not only were his achievements deeply admired, his house drew widespread fascination: It was inside the aged remnants of a late-18th-century, five- story silk mill on Sugan Road. He designed and printed uniquely colored silkscreen prints for the introduction to the portfolio of prints and writings by Keith Haring and William Burroughs entitled "Apocalypse," published in 1988. A partial list of private collectors of his work prior to his death included: Julie Christie, Halston, Jenkins, Mick Jagger, Grace Jones, John Lennon, Rauchenberg, and Warhol. Rupert Jasen Smith passed away in 1989 in North Ridge, Florida from complications of AIDS.

Le Vase de Fleurs, 1959 Linocut: Linocut From Linogravures published in 1962 by Wilhelm Boeck - Editions Cercle d'Art, Paris Printed: 1962 Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, Spanish (1881-1973) b. 1881, Malaga, Spain; d. 1973, Mougins, France - Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga, Spain. The son of an academic painter, Jose Ruiz Blanco, he began to draw at an early age. In 1895, the family moved to Barcelona, and Picasso studied there at La Lonja, the academy of fine arts. His visit to Horta de Ebro from 1898 to 1899 and his association with the group at the cafe Els Quatre Gats about 1899 were crucial to his early artistic development. In 1900, Picasso 's first exhibition took place in Barcelona, and that fall he went to Paris for the first of several stays during the early years of the century. Picasso settled in Paris in April 1904, and soon his circle of friends included Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob, Gertrude and Leo Stein, as well as two dealers, Ambroise Vollard and Berthe Weill. His style developed from the Blue Period (1901--04) to the Rose Period (1905) to the pivotal work Les Demoiselles d 'Avignon (1907), and the subsequent evolution of Cubism from an Analytic phase (ca. 1908--11), through its Synthetic phase (beginning in 1912--13). Picasso's collaboration on ballet and theatrical productions began in 1916. Soon thereafter, his work was characterized by neoclassicism and a renewed interest in drawing and figural representation. In the 1920s, the artist and his wife, Olga (whom he had married in 1918), continued to live in Paris, to travel frequently, and to spend their summers at the beach. From 1925 into the 1930s, Picasso was involved to a certain degree with the Surrealists, and from the fall of 1931 he was especially interested in making sculpture. In 1932, with large exhibitions at the Galeries Georges Petit, Paris, and the Kunsthaus Zurich, and the publication of the first volume of Christian Zervos 's catalogue raisonne, Picasso 's fame increased markedly. By 1936, the Spanish Civil War had profoundly affected Picasso, the expression of which culminated in his painting Guernica (1937, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid). Picasso 's association with the Communist Party began in 1944. From the late 1940s, he lived in the South of France. Among the enormous number of Picasso exhibitions that were held during the artist 's lifetime, those at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1939 and the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, in 1955 were most significant. In 1961, the artist married Jacqueline Roque, and they moved to Mougins. There Picasso continued his prolific work in painting, drawing, prints, ceramics, and sculpture until his death April 8, 1973.

His desire for a career as an artist in the Western tradition took him and his young family to Rome, where he had his first solo exhibition in 1972. Upon arriving that same year in the United States, he had shows in some small and lovely places for example, an exhibit at the Red Barn Gallery on Fisher's Island. He was then selected to participate in a Young Artist's exhibit in Boston's Rose Museum in 1975. This led to his first New York Group show at Andre Emmerich Gallery and then to a long association with Jean Aberbach (Aberbach Gallery) and LIndsay Findlay (David Findlay Gallery). He has also exhibited throughout the United States, and occasionally in Europe. His art is in leading private, corporate, museum and university collection in the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America. With a surreal style combining Pop images from the paintings of Richard Lindner and Cubist work of Max Ernst and Marc Chagall, he was born in Moscow, Russia. He lived in Russia and Italy and in 1972, emigrated to the United States, becoming a citizen in 1983.

Galerie Maeght, Lithograph: Lithograph in colors on thin woven paper Edition of: 109/150 Year 1962 Signed and numbered in pencil Marc Chagall was born on July 7, 1887, in Vitebsk, Russia. From 1907 to 1910 he studied in Saint Petersburg, at the Imperial Society for the Protection of the Arts, and later with Leon Bakst. In 1910 he moved to Paris, where he encountered Fauvism and Cubism. He participated in the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne in 1912. His first solo show was held in 1914 at Der Sturm gallery in Berlin. Chagall visited Russia in 1914 and was prevented from returning to Paris by the outbreak of war. He settled in Vitebsk, where he was appointed Commissar for Art in 1918. He founded the Vitebsk Popular Art School and directed it until disagreements with the Suprematists resulted in his resignation in 1920. He moved to Moscow and executed his first stage designs for the State Jewish Chamber Theater there. After a sojourn in Berlin, Chagall returned to Paris in 1923 and met Ambroise Vollard. His first retrospective took place in 1924 at the Galerie Barbazanges-Hodebert, Paris. In 1933 the Kunsthalle Basel held a major retrospective of his work. During World War II Chagall fled to the United States. The Museum of Modernism, New York, gave him a retrospective in 1946. He settled permanently in France in 1948 and exhibited in Paris, Amsterdam, and London. In 1951 he visited Israel and executed his first sculptures. During the 1960s Chagall continued to travel widely, often in association with large-scale commissions he received. Among these were windows for the synagogue of the Hadassah University Medical Center, Jerusalem; a ceiling for the Paris Opera; a window for the United Nations building, New York; murals for the Metropolitan Opera House, New York; and windows for the cathedral in Metz, France. An exhibition of the artist's work from 1967 to 1977 was held at the Musee du Louvre, Paris, in 1977-78, and a major retrospective was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1985. Chagall died on March 28, 1985, in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France.

Hiding Place Etching: Etching Signed in pencil Year 1927 Louis Icart was born in Toulouse, France. He began drawing at an early age. He was particularly interested in fashion, and became famous for his sketches almost immediately. Icart fought in World War I. He relied on his art to stem his anguish, sketching on every available surface. It was not until his move to Paris in 1907 that Icart would concentrate on painting, drawing and the production of countless beautiful etchings, which have served (more than the other mediums) to indelibly preserve his name in twentieth century art history. Art Deco, a term coined at the 1925 Paris Exposition des Arts Decoratifs, had taken its grip on the Paris of the 1920s. By the late 1920s Icart, working for both publications and major fashion and design studios, had become very successful, both artistically and financially. His etchings reached their height of brilliance in this era of Art Deco, and Icart had become the symbol of the epoch. Yet, although Icart has created for us a picture of Paris and New York life in the 1920s and 1930s, he worked in his own style, derived principally from the study of eighteenth-century French masters such as Jean Antoine Watteau, Franois Boucher and Jean Honore Fragonard. In 1914 Icart had met a magical, effervescent eighteen-year-old blonde named Fanny Volmers, at the time an employee of the fashion house Paquin. She would eventually become his wife and a source of artistic inspiration for the rest of his life. Icart's portrayal of women is usually sensuous, often erotic, yet always imbued an element of humor, which is as important as the implied or direct sexuality. The beautiful courtesans cavort on rich, thick pillows; their facial expressions projecting passion, dismay or surprise, for the women of Louis Icart are the women of France as we have imagined them to be Eve, Leda, Venus, Scheherazade and Joan of Arc, all wrapped up into an irresistible package.

Testa con Cappello Rosso Lithograph: Lithograph on arches Year circa 1980 Franco Gentilini (1909-1981) worked as a ceramist in Faenza and collaborated with Giovanni Romagnoli and Giorgio Morandi in Bologna. He took part in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale, beginning with the acceptance of his work for the 17th Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte della Citta di Venezia in 1930, when he also visited Paris. He moved to Rome in 1932 and held his first solo show at the Galleria di Roma with works in an archaic style inspired by pre-Renaissance Italian art. He also established himself as a fresco painter. He took part in the 5th Esposizione Internazionale delle Arti Decorative in Milan in 1933 and the 2nd Quadriennale Nazionale d'Arte in Rome in 1935, on which occasion the city's governing body bought one of his works. It was in the late 1930s that he began to associate with the artists of the Roman School. There was considerable demand for his work among private Italian collectors after World War II, not least because of his participation in numerous exhibitions.
